Building Materials Manufacturer Fined After Worker Injured at Block Production Line
Brief Summary
A building materials manufacturer was fined after a worker suffered life changing injuries when his legs were crushed between moving frames at a production plant. The enforcement action focused on failures to protect workers from dangerous moving machinery and on not acting after earlier near misses.
What Was The Incident?
On 22 July 2022, an employee entered a fenced cleaning and inspection area at a block production line. He used an interlocked gate that was intended to stop the danger area from being entered when the gate was opened. While he was working on a stationary frame, another one tonne frame moved on to the section and struck him. His legs were crushed and pinned between the frames, and he was pushed further by the moving frames as they continued along the trackway.
What Was The Outcome?
The company pleaded guilty to failing to discharge its duty under Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. It was fined £633,300, ordered to pay £5,583 in costs and a victim surcharge of £2,000. The case was heard at Chelmsford Magistrates Court on 29 January 2026.
What Lessons Can Be Learnt?
Ensure dangerous machinery is effectively guarded. Guarding and protective arrangements must actually prevent access to dangerous moving parts, including when employees enter areas for cleaning and inspection.
